Mahavidya Tara: Savior, Protector, and Primordial Sound

Embark on a spiritual journey with this captivating portrayal of Mahavidya Tara, the second of the ten Mahavidyas. Lucknow-based artist Giri Ratna Singh captures Tara’s essence in stunning detail, making this a unique piece to grace your home. The acrylic painting depicts Tara’s fierce and protective form, a powerful embodiment of the divine feminine.

The Mahavidyas are ten powerful aspects of the Divine Mother in Hinduism. They represent various creative and destructive forces of the universe.

Dhyana-Shloka of Mahavidya Tara:

The name Tara resonates with multiple meanings:

  • Savior or Protector: She embodies safety and liberation.
  • Shining: Like a radiant star, Tara represents brilliance and illumination.
  • Mystical Monosyllable: Similar to “Om,” Tara is a sacred sound with deep spiritual significance.

Interestingly, Tara finds reverence across Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

Origin Story and Connection to Shiva

A captivating story explains Tara’s emergence. When the celestial ocean of milk was churned, it yielded both nectar and a deadly poison. While all deities trembled, Shiva, the embodiment of composure (Akṣobha), fearlessly consumed the poison. Therefore, to prevent it from spreading, Parvati, his consort, held his throat. This trapped poison turned Shiva’s throat blue, earning him the name Nīlakaṇṭha. Tara is believed to be the source of Shiva’s unwavering resolve (Akṣobha) during this act, while Parvati represents the power that allowed him to consume the poison.

Forms of Tara

Tara manifests in several forms, each with distinct characteristics:

  • Ugra Tara (Ferocious Tara): A powerful form associated with protection.
  • Nīla Saraswati (Blue Saraswati): Linked with knowledge and wisdom.
  • Ekajaṭa (One-braided): Associated with prosperity and abundance.

The Primordial Sound and Taming Emotions

Tara is considered the primordial sound (śabdabrahman) that birthed all spoken language. Hence, she holds immense power over emotions, guiding devotees towards inner balance.

Iconography of Tara

Tara shares similarities with Kali in appearance, but lacks the protruding tongue and severed head. She stands upon a corpse, adorned with a skull garland. Her four hands hold a khadga and kartari(sharp knife) (right), and a lotus and scull bowl (left).

Worship

Compared to other Dasha Mahavidya deities, attaining Tara’s grace is said to be simpler. There are minimal restrictions (niyamas) for her worship. She is also associated with the sacred syllable “Om.” Some scriptures place her within the Uttara Mnaya tradition.

Benefits of Tara’s Worship

Devotees who revere Mahavidya Tara experience numerous benefits, including:

  • Freedom from fear: Fear of wild animals, water, illusions and evil spirits are dispelled.
  • Attainment of knowledge: Both material and spiritual wisdom are bestowed.
  • Protection from evil spirits: Tara Kurukulla, a specific form, is particularly effective.

The Importance of Truthfulness

Constant visualization is highly recommended for worshipping Tara. However, strict adherence to truthfulness is paramount for those practicing her mantra. In fact, uttering lies negates the potential benefits.
